Barber Village: Where the West Begins and the Real Food Starts

6 spots · updated May 26, 2026

Barber sits at the bend in the road where Willemstad stops and Banda Abou begins. It is a quiet village — a roundabout, some houses, a primary school — but it has a food gravity that pulls you off the highway. Landhuis Dokterstuin alone is worth the stop: a restored plantation house turned Komedor Krioyo with slow-cooked Antillean food and a courtyard that feels like another century.

More about this guide

The Landhuis Dokterstuin is the anchor of Barber's food identity. It runs as a traditional Curaçaoan Komedor Krioyo — meaning a fixed lunch menu of the day, typically stoba, funchi, rice, beans, a simple salad, and whatever came fresh. It is not about variety; it is about doing a few things properly. Check ahead for opening days as it does not run every day of the week.

Batidos Gallop is the other reason to stop in Barber. This is the kind of batido truck that regulars plan their drive around — fresh tropical fruit blended in a plastic cup, thick and cold, for a price that has not changed in years. Soursop, tamarind, mango, papaya — whatever the season brings. The truck position can shift so Snekkie will always have the latest location.

Barber is also logistically useful. It sits squarely on the route to Westpunt, Lagun, Playa Kenepa and the northwest beaches. If you are driving west for the day, a stop in Barber for a batido and a look at Dokterstuin adds character to the trip without costing much time.
