Eating & Drinking in Pietermaai

5 spots · updated May 26, 2026

Pietermaai is the strip where Willemstad actually goes out. The street runs along the waterfront, lined with converted colonial houses turned into bars and restaurants. It is compact enough to walk end-to-end in five minutes — and packed enough to keep you busy all night.

When
Thursday through Saturday from around 7pm is when the strip gets busy. Sunday afternoons are quieter but still solid for terrace drinks.
Try
A proper cocktail at MosaCaña, a plate at Annie Snack after midnight, and a morning coffee at Van Gogh before the heat kicks in.
Good for
nightlife, cocktail bars, walking from bar to bar, late-evening food

More about this guide

Penstraat is the main artery of the neighborhood. Annie Snack at 434 Penstraat is the kind of place you end up at after midnight — no-frills, no pretense, just food that works. MosaCaña Bar & Kitchen at 41 Penstraat covers the other end of the evening — craft cocktails in a restored building with a small courtyard. Further along the strip, Op=Op Eetbar and Cafe De Tijd share the address at 1-7 Pietermaai and pull in a crowd that mixes locals with visitors who figured out where to actually go. Van Gogh Specialty Coffee & City Roastery at 25 Pietermaai is the daytime anchor — solid espresso, good sandwiches, and a relaxed vibe that makes it worth arriving early. The neighborhood shifts tone as the evening goes on. Early evening is terrace drinks and easy bites. After 10pm, the energy picks up along Penstraat and the side alleys fill out. Friethuis Caracasbaai, while technically on the Caracasbaaiweg stretch, is close enough to hit on a Pietermaai night as a post-drinks stop for fries.
