Lac Bay & Sorobon — where kiters eat and locals gather

5 spots · updated May 26, 2026

Lac Bay is a protected lagoon on Bonaire's east coast — shallow, turquoise, and permanently windy. Sorobon beach at the lagoon's southern tip is where the island's kite- and windsurfing scene concentrates. Around the access road (Kaminda Sorobon) a loose cluster of beach bars, informal restaurants, and local spots has grown up to serve both the water sports crowd and Bonaireans looking for a different pace from the capital.

When
Morning to mid-afternoon is peak time for water sports and the spots serving the kiting crowd. Later afternoon and early evening the pace slows and the lagoon light is beautiful. Weekends see more locals coming out from Kralendijk.

More about this guide

The Sorobon area is a 15-20 minute drive from Kralendijk, following the road that cuts across the island's interior. The landscape changes noticeably — the dry kunuku gives way to mangroves, salt flats, and the brilliant shallow water of the lagoon. The mood changes too: things slow right down, and the food follows suit.

Hang Out Beachbar at Kaminda Sorobon 12 is the most established spot on the strip — beach chairs, cold drinks, and a terrace right on the water. The Sorobon Reef Bar nearby has a similar vibe, with food available alongside drinks. Restaurant Wanapa and the neighbouring Private Chefs Bonaire (at number 8) both offer more structured meals in a relaxed lakeside setting.

For the kitesurfing crowd, Maiky Snack on Kaminda Sorobon is the quick-stop favourite — affordable snacks and cold drinks when you're between sessions on the water. Coconut Kunuku Bar & Restaurant has a different atmosphere: more shaded, more local, ideal for a longer lunch or early dinner.

Further around the bay, Lac Cai Beach at the northern tip of the lagoon is one of the island's most peaceful spots to eat. There are a few informal spots serving fish and drinks; availability varies by day. Foodies Bonaire at number 106 on Kaminda Sorobon is a drinks-focused spot that has become a gathering place for the local windsurfing and diving community.

Bring cash — many of these spots are small, informal, and may not take cards.
